Let me solder your $500
Much has been said, written, blogged (I'm not of any songs written for it - yet) about the iPhone from Apple. Although I consider myself to be somehow "technologically advanced," I haven't found it economically smart to purchase any Apple products - of any kind. Consider me cheap if you want, but I can't justify paying for hype.
After a brilliant marketing campaign, iPhone finally hit the US stores a month or two ago. People stayed in line to buy them - but that's something I already covered in another blog entry.
Let me get to the point: As anticipated, smart people wanted to take a "crack" (literally!) at it trying to modify it. I think one of the mod reasons is kinda legit: crack/unlock it so it works on other networks besides AT&T.
And it happened. A 17-year old, apparently quite smart, cracked it. Now, here's what I have a problem with: he did it the ooold fashion way, using a freakin' soldering iron! What I don't understand is where do these kids find $500 to toy with?

Who ever said hackers were frugal? They take risks...usually with OTHER people's money.
$500 is nothing to this kid now. He's a celeb....

Actually, there's a software-only crack now.
Fame is fleeting. :-)
